Medis Technologies, creator of liquid fuel cell technology, has selected Weber Shandwick for PR and IR services after a competitive search. The firm will conduct media outreach to reporters covering alternative energy and reach out to the Wall Street community, including analysts and potential investors. I've never heard of this PR company, but I hope they are ready to do research on liquid fuel cell technology. Sometimes I think that one of the hardest parts of PR will be relating to your client and understanding their product. When I read this, it also made me think of when Matt Wald from the New York Times came and spoke to us. He would be a good reporter to get in contact with and receive some coverage on alternative energy sources for this project.

PR News 21

Broadcast PR firm DS Simon Productions has introduced Financial Crisis PR Project Insurance, a program that allows clients to pull their PR programs at a percentage of the contract price should the stock market tumble further. The economy in its state right now is causing people to do so many weird things. I mean there is now insurance on PR programs if the stock market falls. Over thansgiving break, my mom gave our family the talk about how "the economy is failing so don't expect very much for christmas." This is a hard time to be in school and trying to make your way into the world. The PR profession is changing more and more each day, who knows if it's for the better. I'm just hoping that by the time I graduate, the sky hasn't fallen.

Brazil's Department of Social Communication (SECOM) awarded CDN Comunicação and partner Fleishman-Hillard an approximately $8 million, one-year contract to promote Brazil as a financially stable, attractive location for foreign investment. Many other countries have been hiring PR firms as well. In the past Brazil has hired advertising agencies, but have now hired CDN as their PR firm to keep up with the competition. I love hearing news like this. It gets me so excited to do future work like this! Doing work in a foreign country would be so exciting. I think this just goes to show that everyone needs some PR now and then and that you can do such a variety of jobs.

Samsung is reviewing agencies to lead its global electronics division, according to several industry sources. The task involves working with the company's Korean corporate headquarters. Samsung is doing a lot of switching around these days. I have a close friend who's father is considering doing work in Korea for Samsung. He works in the engineering scheme of things. With in the next few months, he should find out if he gets the job. The cell phone industry is very competitive and people have a lot of options these days. Samsung needs something to set them apart from the rest of the industry. The next few years will make or break Samsung and whether they can compete in the market. The agency they choose has a lot of pressure and will need new, fresh ideas.

AOL launched a new Web site, “Nice One! Stories of Thanks & Giving,” to encourage users to donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Channels like AOL Shopping and AOL Parenting will feature gift donation suggestions or stories of parents' experiences at St. Jude. They are using every bit of their network to raise awareness. I think this is a very wise PR move, especially around the holidays. I often see commercials for St. Judes hosptial and am inspired to donate. With AOL giving its customers the option to donate while shopping on the web, this will be a great way to earn donations and raise awareness. I hope St. Jude's will benefit greatly from this move AOL has made. This is a really smart idea that many companies should definately keep in mind.

Chevron recently selected Ogilvy PR Worldwide to support its downstream business and marketing communications. Ogilvy will be tasked with “telling the story” of Chevron's brands in traditional and new media. I'm glad Chevron has decided to step up and make an effort to let people know who they are and why they should buy Chevron gas. I've personally NEVER been a fan of chevron. I don't feel like they are a clean or professional organization. All the Chevron gas stations I've ever been to are filthy and unprofessional. They are always a last option for me. I'm very interested to see what Ogilvy will do to reform their image.

Startup companies that engage in PR campaigns are 30% more successful in getting funding within one to three months than those that don't, according to results from a survey conducted by BIGfrontier Communications Group in Chicago. It's really exciting to hear that studies are being done on the effects of PR and that they are proving to be successful. It gives me hope that this career does make a difference and that what I will be doing the rest of my life has a purpose. One company representative made the comment, "When you're able to walk into a room and someone has heard of your company, that goes a lot further in terms of creating a sense of validation rather than walking into a room cold.” If more companies were able to realize that PR would only enhance their company, they would be mre successful.

Reebok launched a pop-up store on New York City's Bowery street in a move to boost its street cred. The store will be open November 15 to December 14 and is stocked with lifestyle-based footwear and apparel and limited edition styles inspired by the city. As far as marketing and PR go, this is a wise move especially around the holidays. Christian Stegmaier, said, "Traditional advertising is overcrowded. We have to be where the consumer is [with] word of mouth, PR, and digital." Reebook has been focusing its apparel with women's fitness, basketball, and hip-hop culture. They are now working to bring in sport brand lifestyle and use their sport heritage to be hip on the street. I've never heard of a pop-up store before and it's actually a really good idea, especially in such a big city like New York.

To Beat the Bookstore:

A group of USU business students are helping give Zambian children a better life by organizing a textbook drive sponsored by Zambia's Scholarship Fund. Zambia's Scholarship Fund, located in Brigham City, UT, works to cycle Zambian children through elementary school, high school and college and then brings the students back to teach at these schools. Textbooks for Zambia is gathering much needed textbooks to support these programs. We invite you to participate in this worthy cause by donating a portion of your profits from the upcoming sell back season to Textbooks for Zambia. We also invite you to place donation boxes in your store location. We feel that this is a wonderful opportunity for your company to contribute to the community and world and to also receive positive publicity and awareness.

SPONSOR APPEAL
We are aware that your store is very appealing to college students who would like to sell their used textbooks for a reasonable amount of money. We also know the most profitable time of year is approaching for you, and we would ask that you consider donating 20% of your profits from the upcoming sell back season to Textbooks For Zambia. This amount is needed to fulfill our goal of 2,000 textbooks by the end of January 2009. By advertising this cause, your store will receive lots of positive publicity and you will have the possibility to gain more loyal customers.

PROBLEM
Education is a top priority for the Zambian people, 90% of whom live in extreme poverty. The only thing that makes a devolving country different from an un-developing country is the amount of education one country has over another. Although they have no running water, electricity or even (in many cases) food to eat, every community builds a school from homemade bricks, even if it interferes with the harvest. However, if a student wishes to attend high school that is a different story, high school education is not free. Currently unemployment soars at an unbelievable 97 % in the Northern Province of Zambia. Because of this lack of financial support only 8 % of Zambians are able to attend high school and only 3 % college. This fund is providing an opportunity for thousands to better their lives on a very minimal amount. This fund operates on a strictly volunteer basis, there are no paid officers or American paid employees. This fund is committed to putting every dollar a person donates towards the people of Zambia.

SOLUTION
We are confident that you can help us in our efforts to collect more textbooks to meet our original goal that would ultimately benefit your business.
Students are not going to Beat the Bookstore as much as Aggie Books or the USU Bookstore because its location is the furthest away from campus. Students must have a better reason to go to your store than the others. Not only do you have better prices, but an even better reason is because Beat the Bookstore will be teaming up with textbooks for Zambia and donating 20% of its proceeds from the “buy back” period. USU students have actively donated to Africa in the past with Aggies’s for Africa’s shoe drive. By advertising this cause around campus through flyers and in the campus newspaper, The Statesman, students will be aware of the project and would increase the potential for loyal customers to do business at Beat the Bookstore in the future.

CAPABILITIES
Textbooks for Zambia is sponsored by Zambia's Scholarship Fund, a non-profit organization located in Brigham City, UT. Zambia's Scholarship Fund was created by Peggy Rogers in 1999 when she learned who wanted to make a difference in the lives of Zambian children who would never have the opportunity to receive an education. Students in Zambia apply for scholarships, and donations can be made to sponsor student’s tuition and other needs. Zambia's Scholarship Fund also sponsors a Book Program, which has sent two 40-foot containers full of textbooks in the past two years. The textbooks gathered through Textbooks for Zambia will be sent in January of 2009 with ZSF's Book Program shipment. The money we ask to be donated by your organization will go towards purchasing the most needed textbooks and also purchasing school supplies to be sent with the Book Programs shipment. 100% of your donation will go directly to children of Zambia. Your donation is also tax deductible.

CONCLUSION
We want you to give 20% of your donations to Textbooks for Zambia. In mid-2008 it cost nearly $15,000 to send a full 40-foot container from northern Utah to Zambia. Each of our volunteers who go to Zambia to deliver these supplies, travel at their own expense. We need your help to cover shipping costs. Not only will this benefit your company and its image, but create an opportunity for an entire country to rise above the expectations that have been set for them and have a chance at life. We will be in contact with you shortly to discuss the details and begin our planning. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely
Peggy Rogers, President

For the leaders of the three Detroit auto companies, as well as the United Automobile Workers, gaining public support for their proposed bailout might be a tough sell. Most of the comments throughout Washington and in the major newspapers and Web sites have been negative toward the financial support the companies are asking for. I feel that the economic uncertainty our country is going to have an impact on public relations and how it functions for the next few years. It will change how businesses will want to be represented and maybe even come down to if businesses can afford public relations at all.

New Moon Girl Media, creator of a magazine, New Moon Girls, featuring user-generated content by and for girls ages 8 to 12, introduced a new social networking Web site, NewMoonGirls.com, to expand its brand online. Their goal was to give girls between the ages of 8 and 12 a place to go online that was somewhere between Club Penguin and Facebook. They are targeting parents, teachers, and other adult influencers. Working on the PR team for New Moon Girls would be a blast. With MySpace and Facebook being such big hits in the social world, kids and especially girls need an interactive website that they can receive a positive influence from and that parents can feel comfortable with. New Moon Girl is doing online and print outreach to parenting and family blogs, women's interest titles, and top daily newspapers. The site is also planning an event in early 2009 with a tech company to promote girls getting involved in technology. I think it will be very interesting to see what kind of event is planned and how successful this website will become.

Ketchum-owned lobbying agency The Washington Group (TWG) on November 14 merged with Clark & Weinstock, sister Omnicom-owned government relations and lobbying firm. Merging two firms is always an interesting situation. Firms such as these who are full of people that are opinionated and are used to working a certain way can have major conflicts. It would be a crucial time for internal PR to really stand and let employees know that they can work and receive benefits as a team. The merge does give a greater opportunity to let ideas be shared and gain for the company to gain a competitive advantage. No layoffs were planned and the combined firm will have about 20 consultants.

PRWeek released its 10th anniversary issue on November 17, making all content from the issue available to registered users of prweekus.com for one week. I thought it was interesting that this website had only been around for 10 years. Through my eyes, Public Relations seems like it is only starting to be taken seriously and really be seen as necessity for companies. PRWeek is such a great resource and I thought it was very generous of them to make all their resources available this past week. I hope more PR News websites evolve in the next ten years and that PRWeek can continue to better their already thriving company.

Omnicom Group launched a new agency based in New York that will focus on incorporating mobile communications into marketing plans and media strategy. I find it fascinating that The world revolves so much around cell phones that they need their own marketing agencies. AT&T will be their first customer. The goal of the company is to never be turned into a replicator of what countless other mobile marketing agencies have done. It will be interesting to see how the image of the cell phone industry will change in these next few years.

PR and the fashion industry would be a dream job for me. It's not something I would ever seriously consider doing as a career, but fashion and PR are two things I have a huge interest in. Fashion and beauty PR are unique because the contacts change so quickly. "Almost every firm has an assistant or intern dedicated full-time to keeping a contact [directory] updated, and it seems silly when you realize one person in every office is updating the same work," Kristen Calavas said. The PR Fashion industry has had a huge problem keeping track of their contacts and a new website call LookBook has been created to keep track of clients and agencies. I think keeping track of networks is so important. I'm in college and building my network right now. Facebook has been a great resource for me to do that.

McDonald's published its first CSR report in two years in a digital format complete with a blog and videos. The study's primary audience is McDonald's 1.6 million employees, plus contractors and staffers of other companies within its food-supply chain. I'm really interested in internal PR so this article hit home for me. McDonald's employees don't have the best reputation. They are seen as people who have no education and will never amount to anything. I think it's really smart to get their customers involved with the company and let them know they are valued. The use of blogs and videos are a great idea to let staff see what is going on in the company and voice their concerns and opinions.

Burger Planet Position Sheet: Team JKM

The hiring of Jayne Petersen and the revolution of Corny the Clown's image will help Burger Planet become the best fast food in the nation. Petersen is a fitness guru who has become famous through appearances on the Opal Whitcomb show. Petersen then went on to help Whitcomb lose 75 lbs. She promotes moderation and has written several bestselling books on weight loss.

Hiring Petersen as a spokesperson is crucial to Burger Planet's success because she is someone women admire and trust. Women in their 30s and 40s (the target audience) will continue to bring their families to Burger Planet and eat there themselves if they know Petersen endorses the restaurant. She brings credibility to the company through her books and experience helping women lose weight.

Corny the Clown will also begin to work alongside Jayne Petersen to help market Burger Planet's new menu. By pairing Corny with Petersen, Burger Planet will be able to revolutionize Corny's image to make him more appealing to health conscience families.

The new items introduced to the Burger Planet menu are to encourage healthy eating and provide alternative choices for consumers. Burger Planet has been a family favorite for years and it is common for our customers to eat at burger planet with their children. The nation’s “Soccer Moms” and other young parents would be most likely to continue eating at Burger Planet with their kids if they feel that we not only cater to their children, but to them as well. By marketing our new menu to our adult consumers we will be more likely to avoid law suits and claims that we use Crusty the Clown just as Camel Cigarettes used “Joe Camel.”

Along with keeping our regular customer base happy with these new menu items, we will attract new customers on a daily basis who will be eager to try our new items. There is a growing demand for healthy eating around the nation which is something that our competitors have also begun to notice. According to the Michigan Daily’s report on McDonald’s in 2003, when McDonald’s introduced their healthy salads, they reported to have increased their sales by 13 percent in the third quarter that same year. As we introduce these new items we can expect to see similar increases in our customer base while retaining our existing customers.

Burger Planet has become famous for its simple menu consisting of soda, fries, and burgers. Our food has been satisfying to our long-time customers and we want them to know that option isn’t going to change. Burger Planet wants to preach the message of moderation, not convince customers to ignore the traditional entrees that made the company its fortune. Burger Planet’s main sandwiches are named after planets. Some of these include, “The Saturn”, “The Venus”, “The Mercury”, and “Hemisphere French Fries” which are the most popular.

Burger Planet only offers soda for a beverage and does not plan to change this fact. We have made the most money selling soda, because of the low cost of the product to us. Customers also now have the ability to request all Burger Planet food products without the bun, making them low-carb offerings good for the Atkins and South Beach Diets. Keeping our same products and letting them be adjustable for other audiences will be a great asset to our company.

A recent article from PR Week talked about how industry consultants forecast 2009 to be a tough year for those in the PR field. Since marketing budgets are often considered a cost center, ad and PR spend are among the first to experience budget cuts. PR agencies have already reported shocking cuts from clients. The quote was made, “I think PR agencies should be prepared to adapt,” Feldman says. “Inevitably, there'll be some winners and losers.” This is a little bit scary to me. I will be graduating and looking to go out in the work force and jobs are going to be hard to come across in the next few years. PR agencies are going to have to work harder than ever before to make sure their clients are still getting consumers to remember their products. This is something college students and anyone else looking for a career the PR field needs to be aware of.

Cook & Schmid PR Agency has been hired to help serve the 48 square miles of North San Diego County by launching a water conservation education campaign on October 13. To start this project, Cook & Schmid conducted a survey of residents to learn more about their habits, knowledge of water conservation, and what would motivate them to conserve. I thought that was fun to read and see that the things we are learning in class are really applied into the real work force of PR. They came up with a catchy logo and let people know the consequences that would follow if they didn't start conserving water. The Olivenhain Municipal Water District (OMWD), has already reported that water use was down 7% over the past month. Water conservancy is an issue I feel strongly about and this article was pretty inspiring for me.

The American Cancer Society has decided to hire Brodeur Partners as its AOR. Brodeur was selected based on its “innovative thinking, transformational ideas, and a clear ability to glean insight". I found it interesting that they chose this agency out of all the many options they had. The ability to "glean insight" was something I'd never really heard as a desirable PR characteristic. It makes sense and is something I'd like to work on developing. Working for a non-profit organization that big is great for a company like that. Not only is it resume building but will be greatly rewarding for everyone involved. This would be a dream job of mine.

NO ONE IS TOO HOT FOR THE TURKEY TROT
Cache Valley residents start off the holiday season with a healthy activity

SMITHFIELD, Utah-Oct 9.- The 5th annual Turkey Trot run is a great way to give back to the community and avoid the holiday weight. It is going to be held on Nov. 22 at the Smithfield Recreation Center. All events (1 mile, 5K, 10K) begin at 10:00 am. Profits made from this race will be used for a youth sports scholarship program.

Kalie Vickers, a participant in this years upcoming 10K race, has been training for three weeks now. “I’ve never had any desire to run a long distance race. However when I heard about the Turkey Trot and that all proceeds go to charity, I knew I had to get involved.” Vickers is doing a twelve week training program to get in shape for the upcoming race.

Not all participants have to go to such lengths to be involved. The 1 mile and 5K can be done at any pace and any age group can participate. Subject Line: Logan Residents Can Find Solace in Economic Struggles

Dear Arie:

I wanted to give you the first heads up on a newly founded company called Cache Valley Area Investors Association. This association meets every other Thursday at the Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce to discuss ways that residents can earn a living while doing something they love. The main objective of the meetings is to teach others that it is okay to work because you love what you do, and not for the sole purpose of earning money. In these times of economic panic, this can be a great way to reassure people that they will make it through and can with a positive attitude.

This association has been founded by Utah State University’s very own staff member, Preston Parker. Parker leads the meetings and occasionally a guest speaker is invited to bring a fresh view on investments.

I really feel this association is something our community could benefit from and look forward to its publishment. For more information about this association, visit www.cvaia.com. We will discuss more information at our telephone conference on Wednesday and I will send you more information soon.

Thanks for all you do,

Four firms have been granted work in Iraq to provide communications services to U.S. military forces. I think it’s going to be very interesting to see what kind of stories leak out from this and how it may affect people’s views on the War in Iraq, along with the upcoming Presidential election. The article talks about how this is going to require a wide variety of communications specialists and that they are going to need to monitor the Arabic and Western media.

This would be such a neat experience. Not only would you be able to work with the media of such an influential country at this time, but you would be able to make or break the how the War in Iraq ends. It is something that anyone involved in journalism would love to get a piece of, especially PR.

PR News 5

Coca-Cola just relaunched is Full Throttle Fury energy drink. I found it very interesting that it was targeted at African-American males and that they changed the color of the can from red to orange.

Big Boi has been chosen to represent this new launch. This campaign will be involved with Big Boi's new album release and listening parties in Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles. I thought it was very smart of Coca-Cola to get a celebrity that many African-American males can relate with. I was excited to also hear that Coca-Cola was considering hiring an external PR firm to help with its future activities.

Spoof, Spam, Lurk, and Lag

I personally was not a fan of this article. I didn't like the setup and the way they tried to explain the differences between these four words. The conclusion was the best part. It came out and clearly stated what each word was instead of the previous four paragraphs of unnecessary babble. The word “spoof” had a completely different meaning than what I originally thought. I really liked how the article stated, “Each MOO presents a particular type of world--a selected slice of reality presented through words.”

Conversational Terrorism

This article was quite interesting for me to read. It was fun to evaluate myself on which "conversational terrorisms" I use on a daily basis. Working at an elementary school, I catch myself using the 'listen up', telling kids that if they would listen to me the first time I give directions their life as well as mine would be so much easier! The 'complimentary insult' is one I'm guilty of using on my friends and family often. If you really stop and think about what your saying and how your saying it, I think most people are not only converastional terrorists, but also victims. One of my personal favorites I've heard a lot is the 'I'm not saying this, but...' People say that all the time! Watch what you say people, it can have negative effects in ways you never intended.

WORK BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT, NOT FOR MONEY
Nonprofit organization offers philosophy on how to work and be happy

LOGAN, Utah -Sept 28. – Local resident, Preston Parker, has founded Cache Valley Area Investors Association, CVAIA, a nonprofit organization. President Parker was inspired in founding this organization when he met others who believed in the same theory; you don't work for money, you work because you love it.

Parker believes that the key to living this philosophy is keeping your passive income high and expenses low. "Once your necessities are covered, money is no longer happiness. People with millions of dollars have the same problems as those who do not. It's just a matter of having a few more zeros or not."

Meetings are held every other Thursday night to help people who are interested in changing their lives. These meetings are a very non-threatening environment. People from all backgrounds are welcome to come and ask questions or advice on investments, money or gaining financial independence. Parker and other guest speakers with solid financial backgrounds lead the meeting. Meetings starts at 7:00pm and are held in the Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce. They last as long as needed and any age group is invited.

People in America have ample opportunity and options to be able to work in a job they enjoy. Understanding and managing passive income makes this possible. There are many associations which are helping educate people in how to truly become financially independent. Cache Valley Area Investors Association based in Logan, Utah, is one such organization. It was founded in July 2007 and currently has 50 members.

You can get involved by sending an email to cachevaia@gmail.com and joining the weekly mailing list.

Tug of war Over the Internet

"Network Neutrality" is a new term for me. The thought has never crossed my mind ever that certain websites are fast because they pay networks. I see the reasoning in wanting network neutrality, but it doesn't seem like a reality to me. We all know the world revolves around money. If someone is willing to pay more, they are going to get the better product. The people providing the means for companies to control how their website work aren't going to turn away money. That's the reality of it. Like all other businesses in this world, Yahoo is going to have to fork out the money if they want to compete with Google, Amazon is going to have to up their game if their going to keep up with Ebay.

Google isn't always our friend...

Privacy on the internet has always been an issue. Google is a site I trust and constantly use. I honestly find it a little bit odd that Google keeps my search history records and that lawyers can use this in cases. I've always been told not to do anything on the internet you wouldn't want others to see. I've never searched for terms I would want to hide from anyone. Most searches are done for educational purposes in my case. I don't think it's really an invasion of privacy. I wouldn't see any reason for them wanting to keep search histories besides advertising and finding what peoples top interests or needs are. I could see this being an issue somewhere down the road, but for now I don't find it a big deal.

A major PR agency in Denver called Schenkein just promoted Sara Antonio to account executive and former Schenkein intern CJ Powell as an account coordinator.

Antonio was said to have a worked with a diverse range of their clients and provides them with nothing but exceptional service. I thought this to be interesting because not only is she a female, but the tradition of hard work still has meaning in the world today. She is a great inspiration and example of what women in the business world should do.

Powell gained his position just be simply being an outstanding intern. It goes to show that we should make our internships count and take full advantage of them. Schenkein was impressed enough by his work ethic that he now has a permanent position with their agency. I can only hope to be recognized and have my hard work pay off to that extent.

When we donate $15 to have a tree planted, why aren't we using that $15 to buy energy efficient light bulbs or recycled paper towels. Making a difference in our environment has to ultimately start with a change in our daily lives. Yes planting trees is a good thing, but recycling and using our engery wisely is more important. PR specialists representing the "Going Green" campaign need to be wary of this and perhaps change their strategy and target consumers to begin making changes in their own homes.

PR News 2

PR News released an article on media coverage of the 2008 Bejing Olympic sponsers. According to a Hill & Knowlton study, companies sponsering the Olympics received a far more positive coverage than negative media attention. Majority of stories covering sponsers such as Coca-Cola, McDonalds, and Visa had neutral coverage. Even though protests preceeding the Olympics provided a risk, negative attention was significantly lower than I expected. A representative from H&K commented that perhaps those who have not previously sponsered the Olympics will begin to reconsider.

The Bejing Olymics were a touchy subject this year and with so much contention between countries the past few years, I think it's smart to leave sponsers in a neutral standing. I feel like everyone is holding their breath, waiting to see how the results from the War in Iraq will play out, how the presidential elections will end and how other issues around the world are going to influence relationships between countries. No one wants to start pointing fingers and accusing companies of supporting controversial world issues.

PR News 1

A recent post on PR News Online brought up the subject of whether or not social media have made people less friendly in person and more friendly online. Are those engaging in these social sites the outgoing and social butterfly type? Or are they the antisocial and awkward type and this is simply a way to be more personable? My personal thoughts are that these social media sites is that they are definately ways for those who have a hard time being personable outside of the virtual world, to put their thoughts and personality out there for the rest of us to see.

I have a friend who does not speak. We have been friends since fifth grade and I've probably never heard her speak more than an hour total in the almost ten years I've known her. It's simply not her personality to have conversations with people. She keeps her thoughts to herself and if asked a question, will respond with a one word answer. However she is obsessed with, MySpace, Facebook, IM, and other social sites. She will IM till any hour of the night and is constantly meeting people over MySpace. If you didn't personally know her, you would never guess she was a shy and awkward girl. She lets her personality come out over the internet and I've learned more about her that way than I could ever dream of in person.

The internet is crippling our in-person social skills. I even catch myself being more friendly in emails than I would be in person. It's important to keep our social skills in balance with the virtual world, as well as the one we live and work in.

President Parker was inspired in founding this organization when he met others who believed in the same theory; you don’t work for money, you work because you love it.

Parker believes that the key to living this philosophy is keeping your passive income high and expenses low. “Once your necessities are covered, money is no longer happiness. People with millions of dollars have the same problems as those who do not. It’s just a matter of having a few more zeros or not.”

Meetings have been held every other Thursday night to help people who are interested in changing their lives.

Please contact Preston Parker for further information or join the CVAIA mailing list by sending an email to cachevaia@gmail.com

PRSA Code of Ethics

The PRSA Code of Professional Standards for the Practice of Public Relations provides the public with a great resource to get an ideas what Public Relations is all about. It argues against the stereotypes of Public Relations Specialists to be image swayers. It gives a great representation of the core values of PRSA members. These values provide the foundation to the Member Code of Ethics and are vital to the integrity and profession as a whole. These include: Advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyatly, and fairness. Out of all the values, I found that the honesty to be one of the most important ones. The codes states, "We adhere to the highest standards of accuracy and truth in advancing the interests of those we represent and in communicating with the public." I feel that without honesty, all other values lose their meaning entirely. It doesn't matter if the company has indepedence or expertise, people want the truth.

Principles of the PRSA Code of Provisions include: free flow of information, competition, disclosure of information, safeguarding confidences, conflicts of interest, and enhancing the profession. The PRSA Code of Provisions went into depth for each principle by discussing the intent, guidelines, and examples of improper conduct. The principle of conflicts of interest was the very interesting to me. I thought it was a very appropriate principle to discuss and that it was a great reminder to accept people for who they are and what they believe, to not be biased and give others the respect they deserve.

Netiquette and Email...

In today's world the internet is changing everything we do. We no longer run to the flower shop, but order our flowers off 1-800-FLOWERS.com and have them sent. Though convenient and time saving, there are a few important rules to remember while using this technology.

People are becoming more and more impersonal in the emails they send. We need to remember that there is a person behind the computer we're corresponding with. A great question to ask yourself when emailing is, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If not, then don’t write it. It is so easy for messages to be misconstrued and problems to evolve over simple misunderstandings. Being simple and to the point in emailing is a great way to prevent such issues .

When sending emails, companies need to reply to customers quickly and in a personal manner. The person you email may never physically meet you, therefore the only impression you have to give is over the messages they receive. It’s important to be professional and personal. Emoticons and using all capital letters is a NO. Always remember, email is physically written and once sent, is not easily erased. Be careful to avoid flaming or any kind of language that could hold you or your company responsible in law suite.

I think everyone can in some way or another improve their email etiquette. For me personally I need to do better at responding in a timely manner. I don’t want my time to be wasted with emails that are irrelevant or not useful, and I try to remember the same for the person I’m writing. Answering all questions asked in emails I receive is another important feature I’m going to improve upon. Listing out a response will help me stay organized and assure that I haven’t missed any questions.

ABC Real Estate Brings New Change For Cache Valley

LOGAN, Utah --Sept. 5, 08- - Cache Valley resident Preston Parker has come up with a new and creative way to buy and sell homes. The idea was first developed by Bill Gatten, a lawyer in California. Gatten’s intentions were to make it easier for middle class people to buy and own a house in today’s market.

Parker has since developed the idea into Cache Valley’s own company called ABC Real Estate LLC. Parker is looking for those interested in investing in ABC Real Estate. Investors can expect 10-20% back in the next 2-3 years and help residents in the housing market.

This new housing investment system involves four types of beneficial investors including a seller, credit, investor, and resident; all are expected to gain benefits from this investment. Letter to Cousin

Hey Katreasha!

I haven’t talked to you in quite awhile, probably since our last family party! I just wanted to drop you an email and let you that things are going so great up here at Utah State. I’m taking a lot of classes for my major, which if you didn’t know, is public relations. It’s in the journalism department where I’ll be spending most of my time this year.

Usually when I tell people I’m majoring in public relations, their first response is, “What is that?” So I’ll go ahead and save myself some time and explain to you what public relations is. People who work in Public Relations are often very socially oriented and have perfected communication skills. Public relations, or PR, are hired by companies in need of someone to relay their information in a positive way to the public. They help the company make the public aware of their quality products or ideas.

When I first heard about PR, I thought the job would mostly entail talking to people all day and telling them how to better their company. I shortly discovered that PR involves a LOT of writing. PR writers have to be well acquainted with the company and its products, and have an understanding of what consumers invested in the company are in need of. Writing was something I was always neutral about, but now I’m developing a love for it. My professors are great teachers and I’m working really hard on my writing skills!

As you probably will be doing in the next few years when you get into high school, research is a big component in PR writing. PR’s have to be able to pull research from all other types of fields and determine what is or isn’t important to their company. There is so much information available now from the use of the internet and it only continues to grow. Research is a very valuable to PR writers and I can’t wait to be doing more of it.

PR isn’t just working for a company though. Other options are working in advertising, event planning, political advising, or working for a PR firm. I plan on going into the event planning side of it. Maybe I’ll start using my skills and plan our upcoming Christmas party! Anyways, let me know how your first week of school went and maybe you should consider going into PR yourself! Talk to you soon!

Love you much, Megan

Practice News Story 11: Accident

April 17, 2008 - 11:00 pm
TREMONTON, Ut.- A tragic accident carrying ten Utah State University students and Professor Evan Parker, has shaken up USU campus. Four fatalities occurred; Instructor Evan Parker, Steven Bair, Kurt Madsen, and Brad Wilcox were pronounced dead at the scene. Two survivors, Jared Nelson and Robert Peterson, were taken to Ogden Regional Medical Center and are in serious condition.

Utah Highway Patrol Lieutenant Jason Jensen arrived at the scene of the accident sometime after 4 pm. Trooper Jensen stated how horrific the scene was. After rolling several times, the van was standing on its wheels, bodies strewn about from the accident. Trooper Jensen said, “In my 15 years, this is possibly the worst accident I’ve ever seen. It’s going to effect the community for years to come. It’s so tragic when so many are involved.

Activities for agriculture week have been cancelled. When asked about the events of the accident, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Noel Cockett said, “We’ve had a hard time recruiting students and we pulled 20-30 quality students this year. To lose this many in an accident is going to have a long term effect on the college.” Not only is loss of students damaging, but Instructor Evan Parker’s death will be hard to cope with.

A memorial service will be announced later this week.

Gateses and Turner In Joint WHO Efforts
LOGAN, Ut- Melinda and Bill Gates were accompanied by Ted Turner as they were seen exiting a private jet on Wednesday . Turner and Gates are hoping to teach African societies about common sanitary procedures and how to use medicine. World Health Organization (WHO) is involved with the Gates Foundation in this endeavor. Gates said, “We’re teaching the people to fish, not just giving them the fish.” Gates and Turner agree that education about the humanitarian products these people are receiving will make the usage of the products more successful. Warren Buffet is also involved in this effort and will be contributing his money.
Malik Ok, an African Mayor met with the Gateses and Turner this week. Ok said they discussed his people’s needs and how to prevent diseases like measles, small pox, HIV, and AIDS from spreading. “People just give us supplies, but we don’t know how to use them,” Ok said. The small village Ok lives in has a high percentage rate of disease and Ok has high hopes that this education will help his people.
In 1999, the Gateses and Turner both donated considerable amounts to the World Health Organization, Rotary International and the United Nations Children's Fund in hopes to eradicate polio by the end of 2000. Though in the past it has been portrayed that Gates and Turner don’t have a good relationship, Gates feels confident that it is. “Turner approached us in this effort and we both have common goals,” Gates said.
Turner made the comment in 1997, "I'm putting every rich person in the world on notice that they're gonna be hearing from me about giving more money away..." he said after announcing his own generous intentions. Turner believes that “philanthropic competition will be an incentive and encourage them not simply acquire money, but to share their wealth. Ted Turner had no comment.
A later press conference will reveal more details and be held within the next week or so.

LOGAN, Utah- Mary Ann Parlin first became aware of the lack of outside health care information while doing a dissertation at Mountain West Physical Therapy. Patient’s lack of knowledge has proved that the healing process takes longer, creates more problems with surgeries, and leaves the patient feeling unsatisfied with the medical staff. In Jan. 2006, Parlin began assimilating ClearPoint, a small team of well-trained and highly-experienced designers with over 40 years of combined experience.

ClearPoint provides pamphlets and DVD’s for patients to watch before medical procedures. Three different pamphlets are complete so far, along with what is called a “pregnancy wheel”, complete with a DVD. DVD’s for in-patient and out-patient clients are available and a Lumbar Fusion Physical Therapy clip. Preston Parker, Senior Vice President Project Manager for ClearPoint, said they have yet to receive negative feedback from any patients or medical staff. “People can recover up to fifty percent faster when they are educated. When they have the education and know what to expect during surgery, they aren’t as afraid. We actively engage patients in facing authentic problems related to their health.”

Two Monitors Destroyed at LDS Church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is missing two computer monitors this morning due to a break in. The church is located on 900 North, 1600 East. Maintenance man, Robert (Bob) Knotz, made the call to Logan Police Department around 6:15 a.m. where Sheriff Deputy Geoffery Hasty arrived at the scene. Hasty said it is still early in the investigation, but it is suspected two juveniles entered through an open window and attempted to take the monitors. The monitors were found smashed in a hallway and nothing else was taken.

Evelyn Breathwait has lived directly across from the church parking lot for almost 60 years now. When asked if she had seen anything suspicious, she stated, “I awoke last night around 2 a.m. to what sounded like metal or glass scraping and thought it was the garbage man. When I looked out the window and saw the garbage cans untouched, I just went back to bed and didn’t think much of it.” Breathwait says she still feels this is a safe neighborhood and that this is not a common occurrence.
Bishop Lawrence (Larry) Shirk of the Hillcrest 1st ward, was the last to lock up last night. He said there was no suspicious activity at 11 p.m. when he left. Bishop Shirks office window had been left open where the monitors were taken. The LDS Church plans to press charges.

Pedro Sanchez, twenty-seven, is the owner of the Pedro’s Mexican Restaurant. He had been cooking hamburgers when the fire started. Only one person, customer Michael Freeman, was in the restaurant and he was able to call for emergency services. Three others, Miguel Sanchez, the brother of Pedro, and his two daughters were in the second level of the building. Maria del Mar, age four, and Mercedes, age two, were taken to the McKay-Dee Hospital for smoke inhalation, while Miguel was treated at the scene.

Rebuilding of the restaurant looks promising for Pedro. “Many have already offered to help rebuild. People like coming into the restaurant and we hope to grow bigger.” He has been in the United States for two years now, while his brother and two nieces are still awaiting residency. The apartment building owner Rachel Calhoun offered no comment at this time.
