Hey Katreasha!
I haven’t talked to you in quite awhile, probably since our last family party! I just wanted to drop you an email and let you that things are going so great up here at Utah State. I’m taking a lot of classes for my major, which if you didn’t know, is public relations. It’s in the journalism department where I’ll be spending most of my time this year.
Usually when I tell people I’m majoring in public relations, their first response is, “What is that?” So I’ll go ahead and save myself some time and explain to you what public relations is. People who work in Public Relations are often very socially oriented and have perfected communication skills. Public relations, or PR, are hired by companies in need of someone to relay their information in a positive way to the public. They help the company make the public aware of their quality products or ideas.
When I first heard about PR, I thought the job would mostly entail talking to people all day and telling them how to better their company. I shortly discovered that PR involves a LOT of writing. PR writers have to be well acquainted with the company and its products, and have an understanding of what consumers invested in the company are in need of. Writing was something I was always neutral about, but now I’m developing a love for it. My professors are great teachers and I’m working really hard on my writing skills!
As you probably will be doing in the next few years when you get into high school, research is a big component in PR writing. PR’s have to be able to pull research from all other types of fields and determine what is or isn’t important to their company. There is so much information available now from the use of the internet and it only continues to grow. Research is a very valuable to PR writers and I can’t wait to be doing more of it.
PR isn’t just working for a company though. Other options are working in advertising, event planning, political advising, or working for a PR firm. I plan on going into the event planning side of it. Maybe I’ll start using my skills and plan our upcoming Christmas party! Anyways, let me know how your first week of school went and maybe you should consider going into PR yourself! Talk to you soon!

Practice News Story 11: Accident
April 17, 2008 - 11:00 pm
TREMONTON, Ut.- A tragic accident carrying ten Utah State University students and Professor Evan Parker, has shaken up USU campus. Four fatalities occurred; Instructor Evan Parker, Steven Bair, Kurt Madsen, and Brad Wilcox were pronounced dead at the scene. Two survivors, Jared Nelson and Robert Peterson, were taken to Ogden Regional Medical Center and are in serious condition.
Utah Highway Patrol Lieutenant Jason Jensen arrived at the scene of the accident sometime after 4 pm. Trooper Jensen stated how horrific the scene was. After rolling several times, the van was standing on its wheels, bodies strewn about from the accident. Trooper Jensen said, “In my 15 years, this is possibly the worst accident I’ve ever seen. It’s going to effect the community for years to come. It’s so tragic when so many are involved.
Activities for agriculture week have been cancelled. When asked about the events of the accident, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Noel Cockett said, “We’ve had a hard time recruiting students and we pulled 20-30 quality students this year. To lose this many in an accident is going to have a long term effect on the college.” Not only is loss of students damaging, but Instructor Evan Parker’s death will be hard to cope with.
A memorial service will be announced later this week.

Gateses and Turner In Joint WHO Efforts
LOGAN, Ut- Melinda and Bill Gates were accompanied by Ted Turner as they were seen exiting a private jet on Wednesday . Turner and Gates are hoping to teach African societies about common sanitary procedures and how to use medicine. World Health Organization (WHO) is involved with the Gates Foundation in this endeavor. Gates said, “We’re teaching the people to fish, not just giving them the fish.” Gates and Turner agree that education about the humanitarian products these people are receiving will make the usage of the products more successful. Warren Buffet is also involved in this effort and will be contributing his money.
Malik Ok, an African Mayor met with the Gateses and Turner this week. Ok said they discussed his people’s needs and how to prevent diseases like measles, small pox, HIV, and AIDS from spreading. “People just give us supplies, but we don’t know how to use them,” Ok said. The small village Ok lives in has a high percentage rate of disease and Ok has high hopes that this education will help his people.
In 1999, the Gateses and Turner both donated considerable amounts to the World Health Organization, Rotary International and the United Nations Children's Fund in hopes to eradicate polio by the end of 2000. Though in the past it has been portrayed that Gates and Turner don’t have a good relationship, Gates feels confident that it is. “Turner approached us in this effort and we both have common goals,” Gates said.
Turner made the comment in 1997, "I'm putting every rich person in the world on notice that they're gonna be hearing from me about giving more money away..." he said after announcing his own generous intentions. Turner believes that “philanthropic competition will be an incentive and encourage them not simply acquire money, but to share their wealth. Ted Turner had no comment.
A later press conference will reveal more details and be held within the next week or so.

Jazz Claim Victory Over Spurs

Salt Lake City, UT- The Utah Jazz not only beat the San Antonio Spurs 106-99 tonight, but they also broke a few records in downtown Salt Lake at the Energy Solutions Arena. C.J. Miles had a career high of 30 points scoring four, 3-pointers. “Darron Williams was able to get me a lot of shots tonight,” said Miles. “D-Will” is one of the top point guards in the league.”
Jerry Sloan was also pleased with tonight’s game. At this competitive time in making the playoffs, the Jazz are off to a great start if they keep up their game. “I really give my team credit for defense. We had some great stops there at the end. I’m proud of my guys.”
Memhet Okur added 15 points to tonight’s game after coming back from the flu, while Darron Williams and Carlos Boozer both had double-doubles.

Google Strikes and Makes Bid for Time Warner
SAN JOSE, Cal.- Media industries have had quite a stir this week as Google Inc. (GOOG) has made a hostile takeover bid for the purchasing of Time Warner Inc. (TWX) Google has offered a grand total of $50 billion dollars in cash and stocks.
The offer has been broken down into three payments. $35 billion would immediately be given to stockholders in cash, $10 billion in stock, and the remaining $5 billion would be debt. The offer has not been accepted at this time.
Google is confident in their offer and industry analysts are hopeful. Google CEO, Dr. Eric Schmidt stated, “Google strikes while the iron’s hot, and the irons hot right now in the media industry. However, Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) and Microsoft Inc. (MSFT) are feeling a bit of discontent over the offer. Yahoo had high hopes of being bought out by Time Warner before Google made their hostile bid. Microsoft had also been contemplating the purchase of Time Warner but didn’t act in time. As they always say, the early bird gets the worm.
